Turtle Walks

Sea turtle nesting season is well underway, so it’s time for turtle walks to begin! Both the Friends of Sebastian Inlet State Park and Coastal Connections have the necessary state permits to conduct them, and they do it June 1–July 31. The walks offer guided groups the opportunity to unobtrusively observe a loggerhead as she digs a nest, deposits her eggs, covers the nest, and returns to the ocean. FSISP holds walks on designated evenings (see friendsofsebastianinletstatepark.org) from 9 p.m. until as late as 1 a.m., starting at the Fishing Museum (14251 Hwy. A1A). Space is limited to 20 people per night; reservations and a $15 donation are required. Participants must be prepared to walk up to 3 miles in beach sand. CC’s walks take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights from 9 p.m. to midnight and originate at Costa d’Este (3244 Ocean Drive) and Grand Harbor Beach Club (4985 Club Terrace). The walks are free, but a $20 refundable reservation deposit is required. See coastal-connections.org or call 772-226-0133.

Annie Jr. & Annie Kids

Riverside Theatre presents six days of Annie, the timeless musical that dates back to the 1970s and is based on the comic strip character Little Orphan Annie, who has been around since the 1920s. It began June 13–14 with Annie Jr., a 60-minute version performed by students aged 11 to 18. Then, the younger children will take over with Annie Kids, a 30-minute version to be performed June 21–22 and 27–28. Tickets are $5. All six days will have shows at both 2 and 7 p.m. The book for Annie is by Thomas Meehan, the music was composed by Charles Strouse, and the lyrics were written by Martin Charnin. County Centennial Finale

Indian River County officially came into existence on June 29, 1925, so the final week of this month brings the culmination of the centennial celebrations. On June 27, Downtown Friday (6–9 p.m.) will include historical items and a ball drop welcoming a new century for our county. The Centennial Parade will pass through on 14th Avenue with historically themed floats; participants will be categorized by decade. For more information, see mainstreetverobeach.org or call 772-643-6782. Sunday, June 29 will feature a history fair at the Heritage Center (veroheritage.org). On June 30, a time capsule will be buried at the County Administration Complex, Building A (1801 27th St.). Among the items it will contain are government documents pertaining to the establishment of Indian River County, historical photos, this year’s winning Kids Tag Art design, and a special centennial bottle of whiskey produced by Indian River Distillery. Burgers & Brews

June 28 is a fortuitous day for United Against Poverty to hold its 10th annual fundraising Burgers & Brews event, because it falls right in the midst of the county’s centennial festivities and just a few days before Fourth of July celebrations. Stop by Riverside Park between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to enjoy live music, a classic car show, vendors, games for adults and kids, a VIP lounge, and, of course, delicious burgers and craft beers. Who will take the title of Best Burger in Indian River County in this historic year? The event is free to attend, and tasting tickets are available for purchase. Check out burgersandbrews.org or call 772-770-0740 ext. 204 for more information.
