Ballet Vero Beach will stage the return of its full theatrical production of Nutcracker on the Indian River for the first time in three years this holiday season. Performances will be held at venues in Indian River and Palm Beach Counties. The ballet company will also host the return of Nutcracker for All, a subsidized and abbreviated Accessible/Family Friendly Series production.

Nutcracker on the Indian River boasts all the whimsy and magic of the original ballet, but moves the action to 1919—the year Vero Beach was founded. In Ballet Vero Beach’s rendition, Marie goes on a holiday journey from New York to Florida, seeing Fifth Avenue mansions, Grand Central Station, and rail cars along the way. In lieu of candy characters, Marie dreams of the Indian River Lagoon, and is entertained by all manner of local flora and fauna.

The show will feature more than 20 professional dancers and more than 75 student dancers, including students from Sebastian Elementary School. Performances are on December 9 at 7 p.m. in Benjamin Hall at the Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens; and December 30 at 7:30 p.m. and December 31 at 2 p.m. at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10-$75.

Nutcracker for All hits the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center stage December 29 at 7:30 p.m. This production is an abbreviated, accessible, and family-friendly version of the production, geared toward individuals with differing abilities and families with children younger than 6. The show features modified audio and visual effects, as well as increased accessible seating and sections for audience members who might not be able to remain seated throughout the performance. Subsidized tickets for Nutcracker for All are $10.
