Nature and art lovers, rejoice! The Pelican Island Conservation Society‘s eighth annual Indian River Bird & Nature Art Show will return to the Environmental Learning Center in Wabasso October 3-29. The annual art show coincides with National Wildlife Refuge Week, which falls on October 9-15 this year.
More than 60 artists are expected to submit works for the juried art show. This year’s artist-judges include: Karen “Keko” Ekonomou, painter, ceramic artist, and co-founder of Flametree Clay Art Gallery in Vero Beach; Shelia Lougheed, an art therapist and muralist; and David LoPresti, owner of LoPresti Art Studio and Gallery.
Guests are welcome to a free Artists’ Reception on October 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by an address by keynote speaker Ruth Stanbridge, at 7 p.m. Stanbridge, an Indian River County historian, will discuss the history of the Jungle Trail, a trail that became a commercial corridor for agriculture and Indian River citrus, as well as a gateway for tourists, treasure hunters, and today’s winter residents. It is now Indian River County’s Jungle Trail Greenway and is still the narrow dirt road it started out to be.
The Pelican Island Conservation Society has additional events on the horizon, including Sunset Wine and Cheese Pontoon cruises to Pelican Island on October 8 and 15, from 4:30 to 7:15 p.m., and October 22, from 4:15 to 7 p.m.
The Environmental Learning Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is open during these hours.
