“Daze of Summer”

As a youngster, George Van Hook was influenced by the Pennsylvania Impressionists and the Brandywine School as his passion for painting developed. Summers spent painting along the coast of Maine further strengthened his connection to natural settings and light. These visits paved the way for extensive artistic travels throughout Europe. Van Hook views his work as a visual response to the world around him; his paintings emphasize strong drawing, harmonious color, and a balance between careful observation and personal interpretation.

“Artist Estates”

Findlay Galleries presents an exhibition of works from the estates of Tadashi Asoma, Paul Aïzpiri, Leonard Nelson, Byron Browne, and additional artists. Represented here is avant-garde Philadelphia artist and educator Leonard Nelson (1912–1993), who explored various art forms and taught at Moore College of Art for three decades. This show highlights the enduring legacy and distinct voices of celebrated 20th-century artists.

“Jill Nathanson”

VBMA’s Schumann and Titelman Galleries will house “Jill Nathanson: Chromatic Phrases,” a collection of recent works by the New York–based abstract painter. Nathanson balances spontaneity with predetermined structure, using color to suggest movement and create an unfolding experience as the viewer explores each painting. She continues to be influenced by her study of Color Field painting in the 1960s and ’70s.

“Coastal Currents”

The watercolor paintings of Sarah Eden Houglum and sculptures of Sandy Bachmann are featured at Gallery 14 this summer, in addition to the varied works of the gallery’s artist-owners.
