“Cut & Paste Paradise”

February 3–27

It’s February, and that means Gallery 14 will be treating us to Derek Gores’ latest collages! He is known for creating lush portraits using recycled fashion magazines, maps, cocktail menus, and more, inviting the viewer to take in the big picture and then examine the constituent parts in detail. “With this show,” says Gores, “I’ll be exploring the coastal lifestyle in new detail: sports and leisure, fashion and self expression, nature and beyond. Come melt into the art with me, first from afar, and then hunt for hidden gems up close.” The gallery will host a VIP preview February 5 and a reception during the February 6 Gallery Stroll—both 5 to 8 p.m.

“Timeless Elegance”

February 4–March 18

Findlay Galleries is proud to present this landmark exhibition of recent works by celebrated French painter Jean-Pierre Cassigneul—his first solo show in the United States in 30 years. Known for his poetic, dreamlike portrayals of women, he blends modern refinement with nostalgic sensibility. His relationship with Findlay Galleries dates back to 1968. Viewers of this collection will perceive the intimate and emotional clarity that are characteristic of his mature vision. “My women exist in a world of reflection and silence,” shares the artist. “Through color and line, I try to preserve those moments so they remain timeless.” An opening reception February 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. will benefit the American Heart Association.

“Construction”

February 7–June 21

VBMA’s chief curator, Caitlin Swindell, has combined select loans with works from the museum’s permanent collection to present “Construction: from Abstraction to Architecture” in the Schumann and Stark Galleries. The exhibition will explore the idea of construction and the relationship between art and construction. For example, painters and sculptors create by arranging shapes, colors, and lines; artists are sometimes inspired by the structure of buildings and physical spaces; and some artists actually make art about construction—its tools, materials, and processes.

“Harmonic Artistry”

February 12–March 14

This exhibition features recent paintings by E.J. Paprocki and Claudia Seymour, both accomplished, widely collected artists. Paprocki is a Chicago native known particularly for his landscapes and cityscapes, painted in the Impressionist style. An avid painter since childhood, he augmented his formal studies with extensive European travels. He prefers to paint on location. Seymour is a realist painter specializing in still lifes and florals. She is fascinated with color and light and expresses her goal as portraying “the limitless beauty of color in every object, as well as the interaction between objects, their shadows, and the surrounding space.”
