It's not easy to create a house that stands out in a community as superbly designed as Windsor, but that is just what Hugh Newell Jacobsen has done. Back in 1995, Jacobsen, one of the nation's most distinguished architects, was commissioned by David and Georgia Welles to build a new home in Vero Beach. Money was not a problem, as Jacobsen knew: David Welles had made a fortune manufacturing Therma-Tru doors, and the Ohio-based couple already had vacation homes in Canada and the Caribbean.

Nor was this the first house Jacobsen had built for the Welles. In 1984, he had designed their home in Ohio and had since worked on nine other houses for them, including three spec homes in Windsor and three in the Dominican Republic.
