While most of us still have our heads on a pillow, Dr. George Nichols has laced up his running shoes and set out on a pre-dawn jog, keeping an even pace and enjoying the quiet sounds of a morning about to awaken; then it’s home to shower, hop on his bike and pedal to his office at Vero Orthopaedics/Vero Neurology.
I run either by myself or with a group. You really can’t do the same thing every day so on my off days I bike one day, run another day and do weights,” Nichols explains, his lean body a testimony to the regimen he adheres to in order to accomplish the goal of completing his 100th marathon this year.
I did my first marathon in 1993 in New York and I wasn’t happy with my time. So six weeks later I ran in another marathon. That one was in Disney and I did better,” Nichols recalls. “That was enough to stoke the fires. The hardest part is the training, the fun part is the race – the first time I finished a marathon (26 miles and 385 yards) the feeling was tops and I keep chasing that same feeling.
