For The Children

A smiling and relaxed Marilyn is surrounded by many of her children’s books in the light and airy living room of her home in Windsor.

Hidden in the midst of Windsor’s many cultural riches is a rare gem. Her name is Marilyn Baillie, and she is the renowned author of 16 natural science books for young children. For her endeavors, she has received dozens of honors not only from her native Canada, but also from Great Britain, the United States and a number of international groups.

In 2012, Marilyn received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contribution to children’s literature in Canada. This award is presented “to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.” The United Kingdom School Library Association gave their winner’s award in 2009 to Animals at the EDGE, the book Marilyn co-authored with her son, Dr. Jonathan Baillie. The Animal Behavior Society, an international society of scientists in biology, conferred its winner’s award to her for her 2004 book, Amazing Things Animals Do.
