Once a bedraggled shack virtually on the brink of disaster, with the Atlantic Ocean lapping at its door, the gleaming cottage pictured here has been reincarnated by the teamwork of Rod and Ione Williams, husband and wife for 54 years. Rod is an award-winning architect and Ione a nationally-recognized interior designer; for more than 30 years, they have also been host and cook of a preeminent Vermont country inn. Located in West Dover, the Inn at Sawmill Farm rates four stars in the Mobil Guide and membership in the Relais & Chateaux hotel chain.

The Williams first came to Vero Beach for a couple of reasons. First, to visit their daughter, Bobby Dee, who lived at Sea Grove, and second, because Dr. Simpson, a Vero Beach dentist who visited the inn every Christmas, kept raving about his hometown.
