When Bonnie Veron moved to Vero Beach eight years ago, gardening was the furthest thing from her mind. After living in a St. Louis high rise without a balcony, digging in dirt and nurturing green leafy things wasn’t something she had either experience with or interest in. Yet the Florida climate and a house with what she describes as “a small nondescript yard” were like a siren’s call, tempting her to plant a few flowers and perhaps a nice hedge.
Back then the idea of joining a garden club didn’t even enter the picture, yet today Veron is president of the 259-member Garden Club of Indian River County, Inc., a fact that still sometimes amazes her.
“It all started because I wanted to learn about plants, so I went to a series of workshops the club was putting on through their educational programs for non-members,” Veron recalls. “Like a lot of people who are into gardening up north, I wanted to learn about the climate and what grows best here.”
