For as long as he can remember, Bob Weems dreamed of building a boat – one just like the wooden Chris-Crafts he saw every summer as a young boy when he and his family visited his grandparents on Shelter Island in New York.
Weems never forgot the thrill of cruising around Coecles Harbor with his grandfather in a 14-foot runabout. Someday, he promised himself, I’m going to build that boat.
Now, at age 52, he finally has.
Yet Weems didn’t keep it for himself. It was built as a birthday present for his 4-year-old grandson Marcus, who was there every step of the way, helping his grandfather with his bright red and yellow plastic hammer, screwdriver and saw. From start to finish, it took them 3 1/2 months to complete the project.
The result is a sleek 10-foot mahogany beauty that Marcus named Post Man.
