Women, it is said, treasure gifts that come in small packages. Yet, it’s usually the teenage daughter, rather than her brother, who leads the family into a large, new world, as she pursues her love affair with a 1,000- pound horse.
At that point the whole family adapts to a new lingo, becoming equine experts. The exchequer of the family begins to grow old before his time. Bridles aren’t just bridles; they’re equipped with different bits in various sizes. Saddles are the most expensive “chairs” in the household budget, and halters are the animal’s attire for leisure hours.
As every horseman knows, horses are measured by hands, a linear measurement equal to about four inches, or the width of a human hand. The measurement is taken from the withers (the ridge between the shoulder bones) to the ground. Admittedly, it is a strange method, probably adopted during the earliest records of civilization.
