Head Start: A Lesson Well Learned

Leonard Edwards considers himself a lucky man. A day doesn’t go by that the director of Head Start isn’t smothered with hugs from children whose eyes light up the minute he enters their classroom. He calls each one by name as he basks in their spontaneous greetings.

For the past 23 years Edwards has shared a special bond with the 3, 4 and 5 year-olds enrolled in the comprehensive school readiness program.

Under the umbrella of the Economic Opportunities Council of Indian River County (EOC), a not-for-profit Community Action Agency, Head Start is all about educating children as well as their parents, letting them know they can break out of poverty and teaching them how to become self-sufficient.
