“When people ask what I do, I say I draw and paint. I find the label ‘artist’ to be an odd one. It means many different things to different people. What matters to me is making the best work I can and not the labels.” So speaks contemporary artist Henrik Simonsen. Renowned for his vivid saturated colors and wild interpretations of nature in prints and oil paintings, he is an analytical, self-effacing man seriously focused on his work.

Simonsen was born in 1974 in Hillerød, in the Danish countryside. He was educated at Krabbesholm Hojskole, a residential school specializing in art, architecture and design, located in Skive, Denmark.

With a keen interest in the New York contemporary art scene, Simonsen next chose to study in the United States at Montclair University in New Jersey, a short bus ride from Manhattan. He says, “I wanted to visit the United States and see New York City. If you ask people to name three famous cities, there is a good chance that New York will be among them.”

Between 1995 and 1998 Simonsen attended Exeter College for Arts and Design, in Exeter, United Kingdom, followed by a painting stint in Venice, Italy; and in 2003 and 2004, Simonsen studied at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Today, he resides in Berlin.
