Instead of trimming the Christmas tree with ribbons, lights and hand-made ornaments, as was the Swedish custom, designer Andi Beck brightened the boughs with lithograph photographs of family members.
God Jul! It’s a Merry Christmas at Hallstrom House where the halls have been decked, the tree trimmed and the table set. You can almost smell the gingerbread cookies baking in the oven.
The pioneer family who once lived, laughed and loved here would be pleased to know that their home, heritage and traditions have been preserved, thanks to the Indian River County Historical Society and talented individuals who have contributed their decorating expertise.
The stately two-story brick house on Old Dixie Highway south of Oslo Road, designed and built by Swedish horticulturalist Axel Hallstrom, has never shone brighter than at this time of the year. And that was what his daughter Ruth hoped for when she willed the family home and surrounding five acres to the historical society nine years ago. Since then, thanks to a collaboration between the county and state, additional conservation land was purchased and the farmstead was placed on the National Historic Register.
