In Jeopardy!

Rich Willing, whose father and uncle live in Vero Beach, tried out for the Art Fleming version of Jeopardy! in the ’70s, but wasn’t selected. After a hiatus of a few years the show returned with Alex Trebek as host. Rich tried out again, and was selected to be on the initial taping of the revived show.

“He introduced fireworks to Western Europe.”  My heart sank as I looked down at the electronic blue screen on which I was to write my question. Too easy!  There was little doubt that my fellow competitor would know the answer as well as I did.

Lest you think I am one of those Mensa-minded snobs, I had reason to rue this particular clue, a reason having nothing to do with being a know-it-all. This answer, in the Final Jeopardy category “Medieval Firsts,” was about to boot me from the Jeopardy! carnival ride I had so enjoyed. Sadly I scribbled my question (“Who is Marco Polo?”) in the light-sensitive computer screen in front of me and listened to the sing-song tune playing in the studio. I was sure Lee, the returning champ for the third time, was going to have the right question written down, too, which meant I couldn’t catch him.
