Fifty years ago, a dedicated group of businessmen, 63 in all, met at the Parkway Hotel to form the Exchange Club of Vero Beach. The date was December 12, 1951, and they were bound by a common purpose first established by The National Exchange Club — to make the community they lived in a better place through programs of service in Americanism.

That purpose and their patriotic passion continues today through a variety of community service projects and youth activities, most notably Proudly We Hail, One Nation Under God, The Freedom Shrine, and Give A Kid a Flag to Wave. For years, club members have handed out hundreds of flags during Labor Day and Christmas parades — this year, a week after the September 11th terrorist attack on our country, they stood in front of stores on Miracle Mile and gave 2,000 more to anyone who wanted one.
