“It takes a village to raise a child,” states the popular African saying, and this is brought home very vividly in our own community by the existence of a unique organization, the Education Foundation of Indian River County. I say unique because, though many cities have education foundations, they are usually funded by the state. In Indian River County it is a people’s organization supported solely by the community and money from the “Support Education” license plates. It allows funds to come directly into the classroom without the bureaucracy that so often accompanies funding sources, and is a not-for-profit organization run by Executive Director Carol Johnson and an elected board of directors.
The foundation grew out of the determination of a young woman named Debb Robinson and her husband, Peter, and is an example of what can be accomplished in a community blessed with people of vision and commitment.
