
The Coalition’s Safe Kids program identifies and targets potential injury problems. It also provides leadership and coordination for community-wide injury prevention initiatives and safety events such as Bike Safety Day.
Barbara Williams’ day begins and ends with moms and babies. For the past two years, the Healthy Families support worker has answered questions, passed on parenting tips and gently offered advice. She’s encouraged exhausted mothers and calmed fussy babies. To her what she does isn’t just a job. It’s a joy.
“Our mission is to improve the quality of family life. We’re helping parents to be the best they can be by promoting positive parent-child interaction as well as learning about their baby’s development,” Williams explains.
“We do this by providing them with information, and giving them referrals if they need them. Our main focus is keeping mom up to par so she can take care of the baby. There’s such a big need out there. For instance, I had a 15-year-old new mom who needed all kinds of support. We just hung in there with her, helped her set goals, and this year she graduated from high school at 18. Good things happen.”
