Buzz is president and Alex vice president of the family real estate business, but Buzz admits he has turned over much of the day-to-day responsibility to his son.

If the name MacWilliam sounds familiar, it should. The family has a long and impressive history in Vero Beach, thanks to Alex MacWilliam Sr., who arrived a century ago to supervise construction of the Riomar Country Club. When his job there was done, he ran for mayor, and for 20 years successfully oversaw the comings and goings of what was then a small seaside village.

In 1949, his son Alex Jr. decided to establish a real estate company bearing the family name. At the time there were only four real estate companies in Indian River County, and Vero Beach was a tiny dot on the east coast of Florida, mostly passed by as Northern buyers seeking warmer climes sped south to Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

There were no computers or internet, word-of-mouth advertising was the order of the day, and sales were sealed with a smile and a handshake.

How times have changed!

Today, according to the Realtors Association of Indian River County’s website, there are over 100 brokerages listed, and technology, websites, social media and virtual tours play key roles in marketing properties and doing business.
