Images of Meryl Streep in dire straits notwithstanding, kayaking is a gentle sport, providing serene access to the wildlife that teems in our backyard. The Indian River Lagoon is the most biologically diverse estuary in North America, with more than 4,000 species living in, under and around it. Including you and me.
A wonderful way to get a close look at this wildlife – going eyeball to eyeball with ibis, as it were – is from a kayak. These lightweight and relatively inexpensive vessels provide a quiet, portable way to get from one of the lagoon’s many islands to another, to take a tour around the sleek sailboats at the marina, to interface with frolicking dolphins. Their shallow draft allows you to go lots of places where bigger, deeper boats cannot, even into water a mere two inches deep.
