The invitation directed us to bring, among other things, a good hat and a sense of adventure. As I drove the long, sandy ribbon of road to the Holman Lodge, lined with fields of cattle and boggy ponds, I understood why these were required. This was a place apart – wild and beautiful and definitely not mainstream.

Which is probably why this pastoral setting on Blue Cypress Lake was chosen by Rene Guerin as the perfect place for an artists’ retreat. Altogether, ten painters and several spouses spent the weekend at the lodge: Rene and her husband Don Wagner; Sharon and Sean Sexton; Lowry Smathers; Cinci Cutter; Pam Tan; Jan and Gus Miller; Katherine and Rody Johnson; Jerry and Anne Rose from Palm City; and Cammy and Spence Guerin from Melbourne. The Johnson’s ever-present corgie, Buttons, was also in attendance and was quickly nicknamed “Morsel” because of the many hungry ’gators lingering nearby.
