
Today, at 63, Shirley lives in a condo just south of Vero Beach and is president of the local chapter of Call To Action. Her life experiences have convinced her that miracles do exist.
Shirley Adler first learned about miracles when she was a small girl living on a farm near Ipswich, South Dakota. “My parents frequently faced difficult times due to the bad weather and my mother’s illnesses,” she says. “Some summers, all our crops would be destroyed by a single hailstorm – an entire year’s work wiped out in 45 seconds.”
In the face of such disasters, Shirley’s Catholic parents always kept their faith in God. “The Lord will provide,” they would say. “And, you know, the Lord always did,” says Shirley.
As a sophomore in college, the young woman decided she wanted to devote her life to God and enrolled at Presentation College in Aberdeen, a school run by an order of nuns called the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At 19, she decided to join the sisters permanently and quickly adapted to the strict regime of the convent. “After growing up in a spiritual family,” she says, “living in a convent wasn’t all that different from living at home.”
