“This is the single most intricate and complex sculpture I have ever created,” says Sean of his eight-foot long, 60,000-piece butterfly.
McKee Botanical Garden has been overrun by monkeys, giant bugs have roamed the grounds and even dinosaurs have walked about in the 18-acre subtropical jungle hammock in recent years. But an art exhibit like no other invaded McKee on January 16, one built solely out of LEGO bricks.
“Nature Connects, A LEGO Brick Exhibition” is the result of a collaborative effort between Iowa State University’s Reiman Gardens and LEGO-certified artist Sean Kenney. The exhibit made its debut in 2012 and will tour in gardens worldwide until 2019. “The show is about connections,” Sean says. “Much as LEGO pieces connect, everything in nature is connected in an intricate balance.”
Installing a show of this magnitude requires a team of experts. In February 2014, McKee’s director of horticulture and executive director met with the team from Reiman Gardens. “At that time, we walked the garden and sited the sculptures for placement,” says Christine Hobart, executive director of McKee Botanical Garden. McKee staff were responsible for leveling the sites and creating barriers where necessary in preparation for installation. They also created the signage and a children’s guide for each sculpture.
