The luxurious 114-foot Zephyria II carries up to 12 passengers to exotic Aegean destinations.

If the thought of sailing through azure waters along the Aegean and Mediterranean coastlines aboard a chartered yacht seems like a far-flung dream these days, talk to two Vero Beach couples — Rena and Mehmet Ali Furat and Ingrid Caruso and John Christian.

The Furats, “snowbirds” from Turkey, own Zephyria Yachting, a 45-year-old family-run company with a fleet of 13 luxury wooden yachts, known as gulets, based in Bodrum, the heart of the Turkish Riviera. Caruso and Christian, full-time residents of The Moorings, are avid sailors whose friendship with the Furats began in a Turkish harbor almost 30 years ago. Today, the four friends share a passion for a part of the world in which the past truly meets the present.

“One of the best ways to explore Turkey’s stunning beaches, culture and ancient history is by private yacht charter,” says Rena Furat. “Turkey’s Mediterranean climate and long summers offer 180 days of optimal sailing from May through October.” She mentions that Turkey is currently welcoming U.S. citizens with proof of a negative COVID-19 test and points out that, “On a chartered yacht, health and safety guidelines can be practiced with ease.
