The composition of fertile soil (a good gardener never says "dirt") has a lot to do with nutrition. Consider the soil in a northern forest where years of fallen leaves and decaying vegetation have contributed to a rich, loamy media full of nutrients. Contrast that to our coastal Florida soil. Life many be a beach to some, but to a plant our sandy soil is merely an anchoring site for roots. Thus, the quality and quantity of fertilizer and the of application are much more important in Florida than up north.
It would be so convenient to go to the garden shop and just ask for plant food, but it isn't that easy. Different plants have different requirements. And here's where the numbers game comes into play.
