Treasure Coast Youth Symphony conductor Tom Servinsky puts players through their warm-up paces prior to a performance at the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts.
Leaning forward on the podium Tom Servinsky points to the violin players and, on cue, strings soar above the other instruments. Less than a minute later he turns and motions for those in the wind section to underscore a movement in an exuberant and technically challenging classical composition.
Perfect. Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov would have been proud.
Servinsky’s smile lets everyone know that he is proud, too. As one of the Treasure Coast Youth Symphony’s three volunteer conductors, who recently completed his 20th season with the Atlantic Classical Orchestra, he is well aware of the effort it takes to perform at such a high level.
“These kids are absolutely amazing,” he says. “One of the things we found was wherever we set the bar they raised up to it and their confidence level just went through the roof. They are playing the kind of music you would expect to hear from a philharmonic orchestra.”
