Marcy and Henry hit the dance floor while on a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1959.

During the 47 years they have been married, Henry and Marcy Von Kohorn have visited so many parts of the world that they sometimes get confused. “That was Japan, wasn’t it? Or was it India? Or Egypt…?”

But one destination they remember very clearly is Moscow during the darkest days of the Cold War. Though their trips were on behalf of Henry’s position as president of Von Kohorn International, a firm that designed and built factories for the manufacture of man-made fibers, both always planned their trips so they would have sufficient time to enjoy their leisure pursuits in a new part of the world. This meant that Henry would pack his tennis racket and Marcy her brushes and paints.

During their visit to Moscow, Marcy had a particular ambition. “I wanted to paint inside the Kremlin,” she explains. “Though this was during the time Richard Nixon was trying to come to a détente with Nikita Khruschev, it still took a lot of Red tape to get permission.
