Gus Curren, the spunky, 25-year-old owner of The House of Champions, has loved boxing for as long as he can remember. He attended his first fight when he was six to watch an uncle compete in a kick-boxing match. The uncle started training Gus for kick-boxing but somehow it never interested him. What he liked was plain, Marquess-of-Queensbury-rules boxing, and his uncle, recognizing Gus’s talent, started training him when he was nine. This was shortly before the family moved from Bloomfield, N.J. to Vero Beach, where his father launched the Curren Carpet company.
After graduating from Vero Beach High in 1994, Gus enrolled at the Claymore Boxing Gym on Old Dixie Highway, which was run by Frank Lasasso. Here he was spotted by promoter Lou Duva, who hired him as a sparring partner for the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.
