It is a hot sultry night in the sanctuary of the Community Church and the Vero Beach Choral Society’s spring pops concert, the last performance of the season, has just ended. Normally, the choir would scatter with the wind, but this May evening some of the members, dressed in shorts and flip-flops, gather around the Steinway grand to listen to director Ray Adams.

“When we get to Austria and sing in cathedral naves and concert halls, the sound is going to roll and sound like chords. Singing there will take every resource you have. So stay together now and dream that you’re in the Esterhazy Palace. Let’s go.”
