Looking into the beautiful blue eye of Precious, a black and white female border collie and hound mix, it is hard to understand the heartlessness of some humans. Once used as a hog-hunting dog, Precious sustained a serious injury to her left eye resulting in its removal. No longer wanted by her owners, she was dropped off at a shelter like so many other unwanted pets are. With so many animals having unique and often tragic stories of their own, it is a blessing to have a place willing to give the voiceless the care they deserve. Luckily, Indian River County has just such a place.

Stepping inside Helping Animals Live and Overcome (H.A.L.O.), Indian River County’s only no-kill animal shelter, feels a bit like stepping inside a well-contained ball of electricity. The energy is palpable. Somehow smiles and laughter abound as the staff works at a feverish pace to care for all of the animals, both residents as well as the almost continuous influx of new drop-offs.
