It was water that brought Cheryl and Ken Hebert to Florida — the kind you drink. Ken, a wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers back in the ’60s, now works in the water-utilities industry and had taken a job with a subsidiary of Culligan Water as vice president for sales in the Fort Pierce regional office.

As befits a couple who had spent most of their adult lives in Houston, the nation’s fourth largest city, the Heberts were ambivalent about moving to a small Florida town they had only recently heard of. Though neither had been born in Texas, both had lived in big cities all their lives. Ken is a native of Southern California who moved to Texas when he was three, and later attended the University of Houston. Cheryl was born in Pittsburgh, studied civil engineering at Vanderbilt University and moved to Houston in her early 20s.
