Ted Colangelo, retired chairman of a Connecticut marketing firm, polishes his cooking skills in his new home at Orchid before heading to Venice.

There are a legion of reasons to visit Venice. The flutter of pigeons in St. Mark’s Square, serenades by handsome gondoliers, a Mardi Gras celebration of extraordinary debauchery, brilliant Murano glass, Bellinis at Harry’s Bar — even cooking classes.

While learning to cook is not at the top of most visitors’ to-do lists, new Orchid resident Ted Colangelo and his 24-year-old daughter Kate traveled to Venice earlier this year to learn the craft of  Italian cooking at the stove of a master, Marcella Hazan. Marcella is celebrated as the soul of Italian cooking and the guardian of its classic techniques. Her latest book, Marcella Cucina (HarperCollins), is both a recipe book and personal memoir. The recipes aren’t always easy, but according to those who love to cook, like Ted, getting there is half the fun.
