The answer to the tormenting question posed in our headline might be “Something you made all by yourself.” Done right, a home-made gift is both personal and thoughtful, demonstrates devotion of time and effort, and costs a lot less than diamond cufflinks. Something from your kitchen can be presented in a colorful tin or bright basket and garnished with a length of festive ribbon. It can be elegant (truffles) or down-home (marmalade), sweet (cookies ) or sour (herbed vinegar), or an untraditional tradition like Chocolate Chip Fruitcake.
Let’s start with cookies. You eat them with milk when you need a little comfort. You dip them in red wine for a sophisticated treat. You can crumble cookies with butter to make a tasty crust for Key Lime pie. You should always pack them in a lunch box to sweeten up the afternoon. Use them shamelessly as a bribe for good behavior from child and dog alike. And of course, leave them as a snack for Santa on Christmas Eve.
