When the Mountain Came to Vero Beach

Even for Waldo Sexton, the building of a mountain in Vero Beach was quite a stretch. How could he know it would help save his most famous creation?

It was in December 1960, and I can still remember how we spilled out of the family station wagon and ran to the foot of the colorful tile stairway.

 How tall it seemed as we began our climb! So tall, in fact, that we rested on the benches halfway up, examining the iron railing and ornaments before tackling the summit. From there we could see the ocean glittering in the distance beyond the sandy track to the east and the island vistas of seagrape, Austral­ian pine and cabbage palms all around. The mountain backed up to, and seemed to drop off into, Bethel Creek. Recently enlarged and walled on the west bank, the creek was all that re­mained of an inlet to the ocean that had opened and closed during fluctuations of sand and tide in earlier days.
