Will Work for Chocolate. Wouldn’t You?

My Aunt Mamie was a serious chocoholic. She had a needlepoint pillow that read, “Will Work for Chocolate.” She lived in Home­stead, and every time my mother or I trekked down to visit her, we made an obligatory stop at Bruno’s Chocolate Factory to pick up several pounds of milk chocolate pecan bark to satisfy Mamie’s mania. Of course I had to get myself a half-pound box just to survive the trip.

Bruno’s opened in 1952 and was owned by Carmen and Evelyn Bruno until 1976, when Doug and Valerie Anderson decided to leave their life in the Northeast and buy a business in the sunshine. After meeting with a business broker in Florida, Doug re­turned home, leaving a contract and deposit on the candy factory. The very next day, Valerie flew down, okayed the purchase and suddenly the Andersons were in the candy-making business.
