Profile
Dr. Efrain Acosta-Leon, a dedicated psychiatrist, was born and raised in Puerto Rico. His early passion for biology led him to pursue a career in medicine, beginning with pre-medical studies and culminating in his medical degree from the Universidad de Guadalajara’s International Program. Following his graduation, he enhanced his medical education through the Fifth Pathway Program at New York Medical College.
During his clinical rotations, Dr. Acosta-Leon was deeply inspired by a mentor who sparked his interest in the intricate workings of the human brain and its influence on behavior. His experiences during the child and adolescent psychiatry rotation were pivotal, steering him toward a career focused on early interventions, family dynamics, and the study of human behavior.
Dr. Acosta-Leon completed his adult psychiatry residency at Harlem Hospital, affiliated with Columbia University. This environment and experience helped me to develop a strong clinical background in acute psychiatric settings and in the addiction field. His passion for child psychiatry led him to a “fast track” child and adolescent psychiatry program, allowing him to specialize early. He completed his fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he was honored to serve as a chief resident in his final year. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Acosta-Leon relocated to Florida with his family. Throughout his career, he has gained extensive experience across various levels of care, including inpatient units and outpatient clinics. This diverse experience has helped him develop strong clinical and leadership skills. His work spans private practice and for-profit and nonprofit hospital settings, where he continues to contribute significantly to mental health care.
For the past two years, Dr. Acosta-Leon has served as the chief medical officer of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast. Under his leadership, the organization is committed to maintaining a high standard of care and preparing for the future by establishing and updating best practices to ensure quality care. The practice’s mission is to support individuals and families facing mental health and substance abuse challenges, ensuring they receive the necessary care and resources.
