Open To The Ocean

The Goodes’ living room, designed by Susan Schuyler Smith, ASID, was awarded first place in the 2002 Florida North Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers’ Annual Design Competition. Nancy Goodes, seen here with Heidi, showed a preference for contemporary design at an early age.

From the minute Nancy Goodes first saw the John’s Island residence that she and her husband would be calling home, she knew changes were in order. For someone with an affinity for contemporary design, the traditional moldings and elaborate window treatments throughout the three-bedroom condominium would never do. They made the rooms appear smaller and detracted from the ocean view.

“My environment is very important to me. I wanted everything to be open. I wanted to have space,” says Nancy.

“Mel and I love the beach, the aesthetics. We’re very casual people. I wanted this to look like a beach house where the colors are very understated, calm and comfortable. At the same time I wanted it to be personal, not cold.”

Far from being cold, the end result is warm and inviting just as she envisioned, thanks to Susan Schuyler Smith, ASID, president of Spectrum Interior Design, architect Lynn Silkworth, and Darwyn Jones, whose Jones & Jones Renovation Works managed the project.
