After happily commuting between Toronto and Vero Beach for nearly 20 years, Canadian broadcaster Valerie Pringle looks back with a smile on her initial journey south. “My husband Andy and I were invited for a long weekend in Vero Beach by some friends,” she recalls. “We’d never gone south for a holiday, never even vacationed at a beach.”
After months in cold, gray, wintry Toronto, Valerie was secretly looking forward to a vacation in the sunshine, but her investment banker husband was appalled at the idea. Like many Canadians, he pictured Florida as being strictly for the old and decrepit.
So when they arrived in Vero Beach to celebrate the opening of the Windsor Beach Club, the Pringles were amazed to find themselves wining and dining with dozens of other young people. In fact, they were both having such a good time that when Valerie received a phone call to hurry back to Toronto to interview a Quebec Separatist for her television program Canada A.M., she was miffed at the thought of having to leave Vero Beach. As soon as the interview had been taped, she returned to Windsor, only to discover that, during her absence, her husband had bought a cottage.
