The luxurious oak canopy provided a template for the underplantings

When Jill and Paul Kaneb purchased a pristine property on the east side of the Indian River Lagoon, siting the residence and guest house was of paramount importance. The land had an irregular shape, several clusters of massive live oaks and views of both the lagoon and a wetland area where significant numbers of birds reside. They wisely decided to bring on a landscape architect early in the planning process so that the home and its surrounding landscape would present a unified appearance.

They commissioned Elizabeth A. Gillick, ASLA to help them with their mission. Working closely with the Kanebs, she did the conceptual planning for both the hardscape and landscape elements. “The main house was to be quite expansive from right to left,” Gillick explains. “A central axis was chosen that begins at the foot of the main drive and travels through the front entrance of the house, out across the pool to a point on the river.”
