
Val Zudans, M.D., of the Florida Eye Institute reports that nearly 300 people have checked into the institute’s Facebook page, enabling them to receive news about events at the institute and links to articles about new developments in eye care.
Until a few years ago, social networking sites like Facebook were used almost exclusively by 20-somethings preoccupied with staying connected with circles of friends via photo-sharing and clipped messaging. They needed only some sort of computer, Internet connection, and a decent response to online friend requests to stay in the loop about everything from gloomy moods and concert plans to how someone spent their last paycheck. Their parents and grandparents saw no practical use for the thing, socially or otherwise.
But today folks in their 30s, 40s and 50s – as well as growing numbers in their 60s and beyond – are joining these informal online gatherings. And the vehicles for getting there have enlarged to include iPhones, Androids and other mobile devices.
For folks in the business and non-profit worlds, the phenomenon has wrought both opportunity and fear.
