For a man renowned for his physical bulk, NBC weatherman Willard Scott has a surprising penchant for lightweight books. Last year, he published The Older the Fiddle, The Better the Tune, a paean to the joys of old age. Now, he’s back with If I Knew It Was Going To Be This Much Fun, I Would Have Become a Grandparent First (Hyperion, $22.95), reminiscences by more than 100 men and women on the pleasures of becoming a grandparent. Among the contributors are such well-known names as Buzz Aldrin, Art Buchwald, George Bush, Sr., Chubby Checker, Phyllis Diller, Evel Knievel, Art Linkletter, Paul Simon, Nancy Sinatra and Mike Wallace.
Though Scott’s little book is hardly literature, it should make a nice gift for National Grandparents Day, which falls this year on Sunday, Sept. 12. And, if nothing else, it will be a pleasure to meet the man who entertained us for so many years on the Today show.
