These caramel cookies are famous in the Lowe family. Read how they came to be on page 124.

As the holiday season once again gets underway, families all across the country are preparing for celebratory get-togethers — planning menus, digging out old family recipes and filling the air with delicious aromas of Christmas.

With that in mind, this month’s Local Flavor takes you into the kitchens of the hardworking folks who bring Vero Beach Magazine to life each month: the writers and staffers, several of whom are sharing holiday memories and family recipes that hold special meaning for them at this time of year.

So, try your hand at Emily Tremml’s award-winning recipe for corn pudding; sink your teeth into Marie Van Meerten’s sour cream pound cake; or, if cooking isn’t your thing, read how Ann Taylor rose to the occasion with her easy-peasy Jumble recipe.

We hope you enjoy their stories, try their recipes and heed their sage advice: absolutely no substitutions! No low-fat this, sugar-free that — just good food made with real ingredients, baked with plenty of love. Or, in the words of humorist Erma Bombeck, “Seize the moment! Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.”

From all of us at Vero Beach Magazine to each and every one of our dear readers, we extend our heartfelt wishes for a blessed — and delicious — Christmas season. Eat, drink and be merry, and we promise we’ll address healthy eating in our January issue!
