Vero Beach’s high season for entertaining is officially here, and as the saying goes, “Let the festivities begin.” Entertaining friends in one’s own home is the ultimate expression of warmth and hospitality, and one of the most useful and versatile means of entertaining that is widely used locally is the cocktail party.
A cocktail party can be as simple and as short-lived as having a few people in prior to going out to the main event – usually dinner at a restaurant or club. Or it can be as elaborate as a cocktail buffet for 100-200, which often will serve as dinner and last for several hours.
Culinary considerations for each occasion differ. For example, when preparing for a pre-dinner gathering, a hostess needs only a few varieties of hors d’oeuvres and will want to keep the offerings light. On the other hand, a hostess who entertains with a cocktail buffet will want to increase the variety, including more substantial hors d’oeuvres.
