You may have grown up hearing that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, and perhaps there is some truth to that old adage — though we happen to think culinary courtship can go both ways. No matter who does most of the cooking in your relationship, surprise your sweetie by stepping up your dinner game with this romantic dinner for two in honor of this month’s amorous holiday.

Whether you regard Valentine’s Day as a silly “greeting card holiday” or see it as an opportunity to celebrate your one true love, we all have to eat dinner, why not elevate the experience every once in a while? 

Dining out on Valentine’s Day is nice, but there’s something special about planning a romantic dinner for two in the comfort of your own home. Light some candles, turn on some soft music, and break out the good china for an enhanced ambiance.

What could be more romantic than Champagne, lobster and chocolate? While these treats might not be on the menu every day, special occasions call for special meals.


Velvety Chocolate Mousse

SERVINGS: 2, plus leftovers

This egg-free version of chocolate mousse is light and smooth, perfectly sweet and just rich enough to feel decadent. It’s less tedious than traditional chocolate mousse recipes, requiring just six ingredients, one bowl and 10 minutes of your time. Serve it up with freshly whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings for garnish.

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1⁄2  cup whole milk
  • 1⁄3  cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1⁄4  cup confectioners’ sugar, plus more as needed
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Dark chocolate shavings (for garnish)

In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine the cream cheese and heavy cream on high speed until soft peaks form, about 3 to 5 minutes. Lower the speed to medium, then slowly add the milk, cocoa powder, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla. Whisk until smooth, being careful to not overmix, about 1 to 2 minutes. Stop the mixer and taste, adding more confectioners’ sugar if you prefer it sweeter. Divide the mousse among 4 small bowls, cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least an hour (or up to 3 days). For serving, top the mousse with a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings.
