The Spiny Lobster…Who Needs Claws?

Blades Robinson, Indian River County firefighter, is recognized by other divers with a considerable trace of envy as the best lobster catcher in the area. Lieutenant Nick Schauman and Sergeant Mike Jacobsen of Indian River Shores Public Safety agree. While both men are avid divers themselves and have a reasonable amount of success going after the clawless crustaceans, they say, “Blades is the best. We don’t know how he does it.”

The two-day sport lobster season is just past; this year it was July 30 and 31, and, as usual the legal limit was six each day. Blades has the advantage of experience – for six years he was a commercial lobsterman, diving on his days off from the fire department, which he joined in 1980.
