Vero Beach has been the scene of several of the most intriguing mysteries discovered in Florida: the bone fragment found by James Kennedy that seems to feature the earliest artwork known in North America; the skeletal remains of an Ice Age man that were unearthed, then lost; the ancient fossilized bones of a gigantic sloth that also roamed the area.
Not all of our local mysteries are prehistoric, however. Just months before the Vero Beach Naval Air Station closed as a military base at the end of World War II, naval aviators stationed here also played a key role in one of the great mysteries of the 20th century – the disappearance of Flight 19 in the Bermuda Triangle. Today, 65 years later, the mystery remains unsolved.
