A Stitch In Time For England’s Queen

The Vero Beach stitchers’ first handiwork is located in Westminster Abbey, part of the great London tourist complex that also includes the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben clock tower, seen above.

The highlight of the Riverside Theatre’s October trip to London was attending Evensong in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Following the service, the chapel’s dean blessed the needlework of the Vero Beach stitchers who were in the congregation.

“We at St. George’s are hugely grateful to friends from the United States of America who have so generously given…these gifts of kneelers for the dean’s and canon’s stalls and cushions in the choir,” said the dean.

Local resident C. Gorham (Doc) Phillips had been commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II to take on the intricate assignment in 2005. His needlepoint committee included Ann Cook, Florence Durfee, Bill Hutchison, Patsy Kolbe, Patty Morse, Marti Phillips, Carol Walker and designer Trubey Walker.

This was Doc’s second royal  commission. Previously, he, Patsy and Bill had stitched three cushions for the high altar in Westminster Abbey.
