Big Brothers/Big Sisters isn’t just about learning how to read and improving grades. A special bond takes place and there are times when celebration is called for. The joy of being together can be seen in the faces of young and old alike.

One of the first things Allan Klotsche did when he moved to Vero Beach six years ago was to open the telephone directory and look for the number of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. It wasn’t listed anywhere.

Surprised, Klotsche, who had long been involved with the non-profit organization while living in Milwaukee, decided to look further. That looking led him south to the Fort Pierce office of BB/BS of St. Lucie County where he asked to speak with Judi Miller, who heads up the area affiliate.

“I didn’t have an appointment, but she saw me anyway and we talked for over two hours,” Klotsche recalls. “I had served as board chairman for the Milwaukee Big Brothers/Big Sisters, which has one of the largest and best programs in the country, so I had a lot of background and ideas.”

Miller immediately knew that Klotsche was the person who could bring the organization’s mission – helping children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships – to Indian River County.
