Ann Beard (seated) and Marcia Luigs are highly-respected rules officials for the United States Golf Association. Dedicated USGA volunteers, Marcia is currently serving as Chairman of the Women’s Committee, a position that Ann once held. Ann was also captain of the U.S. Women’s World Amateur Team. On a lovely summer day at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Ridge, Oregon, in what was supposed to be the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open Championship, the unexpected occurred. For Annika Sorenstam, the 18th hole had begun with a beautiful drive. Her second shot was a different story. It sailed over a bunker and above a scoreboard, coming to rest against a bank of portable toilets. What to do next?
The rules officials who converged on the scene would have their skills put to the ultimate test. Vero Beach residents Marcia Luigs and Ann Beard would be able to handle it. Both women are seasoned rules officials with an impressive list of credentials.
Marcia was on the scene that day. She recalls, “Facilitating that ruling was a nightmare, but we were ready. We do get some challenging situations at any Women’s Open. The infrastructure of TV towers, stands, monster boards and public facilities tends to necessitate some unusual rulings.”
